Finnish Animation Guild’s new series of Masterclasses offer an unique opportunity for the audience to hear more about animation art. In this series a diverse selection of Finnish and international animation artists talks about their films and working process. In the beginning of each Masterclass we have also a honor to screen their selected works.

Lucija Mrzljak -masterclass

The speaker of the first Masterclass is Lucija Mrzljak (1990, Zagreb). Mrzljak is a Croatian animation film director, illustrator and sound artist based in Tallinn.  In 2016 she completed her MA in animation in Estonia as a student of Priit and Olga Pärn. Since 2016 she co-directed several award-winning short films with Morten Tšinakov in co-production with Eesti Joonisfilm studio in Tallinn and Adriatic Animation studio in Zagreb: Demonstration of Brilliance in Four Acts, The Stork (2020) and Eeva (2022), which will be seen during the Masterclass. Eeva has won numerous prizes around the world and was short-listed for the Oscar Academy Awards.Besides animation Lucija also works as an illustrator. She illustrated various posters for film festivals and published a number of illustrated books for children in collaboration with Estonian and Croatian authors. Currently she is teaching at the Animation department at the Estonian Academy of Fine Arts and studies Audiovisual Composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Jenny Jokela -masterclass

The quest speker of the second Masterclass if Finnish animation artist Jenny Jokela. In the screening her latest paint animation Sweet Like Lemons will be seen.

Jenny Jokela (b.1990) is a Finnish animation director and artist based in Edinburgh. She graduated from MA Animation at Royal College of Art, London, in 2017. Jokela has won multiple awards including Cristal for best graduation film at Annecy 2018 for her film “Barbeque“, and her film “Sweet Like Lemons” got Bafta-longlisted in 2023. Her films tend to explore sexuality and trauma through visceral, playful and symbolic painted animation. Her artistic work includes having her animation performed by a large ensemble at the Pompidou gallery in Paris in 2022. Jokela also directs children’s TV series; Hoppsorna (YLE, Finland, 2018-2022) and Arne Alligator (SF Studios, Sweden, 2023). Her commercial clients include BBC, Tate, Adult Swim, Channel 4, Disney, UEFA and Vogue.

These Masterclasses are organized in collaboration with national interdisciplinary art organisation MUU ry. and in with financial support of Audiovisual Centre AVEK.

The Cable Factory’s Konttori is a large two-storey space at the Cable Factory that includes a café, a shop, a reading room with cultural magazines, and an event venue. Entrance to Konttori is in the gatehouse leading from Tallberginkatu to the courtyard of the Cable Factory, opposite the mural by Thierry Noir.
