What it’s to be a doplhin?

Ääreen. Documentary in animation – project will bring interactive documentary animation to Central Library Oodi’s Kuutio premise. Jury has chosen a project called “In another’s skin. Bio sonar – How it is to swim with dolphins?” by Leena Pulkki and Karoliina Paappa.

”Our proposal Bio sonar discourse about dolphins and their echolocation. Our project’s aim is to translate dolphins’ under water world to the form understandable by humans and to offer immersive art experience which increases empathy”, say Leena Pulkki and Karoliina Paappa.

The project in question is an immersive animation which will be projected to two walls of Kuutio. There is a sound world included which will formed by clicks and whistles of dolphins. Characters are combinations of different animation techniques and the underwater image is video footage.

According to the Jury, this projects is memorable and immersive. The project utilizes the possibilities of Kuutio and creates multi sensors, comprehensive experience. Interspecific communication and empathy are subjects which resonate these times and the point of view of this project is unique.

The Promotion Center for Audiovisual Culture, AVEK supports the production of the selected project with 10 000 euros

The jury was formed by director Kari Juusonen, artist Maija Blåfield, curator Elina Suoyrjö, media art advisor Milla Moilanen from AVEK, media artist and producer Marko Tandefelt, special librarian Sanna Huttunen from Oodi and librarian Tuukka Haapakorpi from Oodi.

Ääreen project presentation

Ääreen is an art project that combines documentary with immersive animation. It will be conducted at Oodi Central Library in Helsinki 2021. The purpose of the project is to support and encourage artists interested in documentary animation, and to create new media presentation practices in the library context

The project is a joint effort by Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Oodi Central Library, Artists’ Association MUU, Finnish Animation Guild, Turku Animated Film Festival, Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture (AVEK), Aalto University, National Audiovisual Institute KAVI, and Danish ANIDOX forum
